A touch of automotive history in Selb
Last week, the time had come: a group of enthusiastic Mercedes SL classic car fans stopped off at RAPA.
The factory premises were lined with gleaming classics and newtimers – a rolling museum that impressively presented automotive history on four wheels. This visit was a real highlight for employees, guests and anyone interested in technology.
The models in the SL series are considered milestones in the art of German engineering. From the elegant 190 SL to the legendary 300 SL “Gullwing” – they stand for style, innovation and top quality. Values that have also been firmly anchored at RAPA for over 100 years. So it was all the more fitting that this visit was not only emotionally moving, but also perfectly suited the company in terms of content.
What connects RAPA with the SL? More than you might think.
What may seem simple today was often highly innovative back then – just like the solutions from RAPA: modern mechatronic systems, intelligent valve technology and precise components for the mobility of today and tomorrow – quiet, reliable and powerful.
One of RAPA’s first projects in the automotive industry was the development of hydraulic valves for the electro-hydraulic soft top actuation of the Mercedes SL of the R129 series – an elegant, trendsetting roadster that is still one of the most successful models in SL history. Vehicles in the SL model series (R230) were also equipped with Active Body Control (ABC). Here, a complex valve system from RAPA was used, which is regarded as an innovation leader in the field of active chassis. RAPA technology is thus part of a long tradition of technical excellence.
Whether in active chassis or in electromobility applications – RAPA technology usually works in the background, but makes a decisive contribution to ride comfort, dynamics and technological progress.
Technology connects – in conversation and in enthusiasm
After a warm welcome, the guests were given exciting insights into the history and product world of RAPA. A short tour of the plant rounded off the program. The discussions that followed were particularly lively: Experts from the development department discussed vehicle details, various drive concepts and the future of mobility with the SL drivers. It quickly became clear that enthusiasm for technology transcends age boundaries.
The dialogue was characterized by mutual respect – for the knowledge, experience and innovative spirit that characterize both classic and modern vehicle development. And, of course, it was also explained where RAPA components are used today: mostly hidden, but of essential importance.
